Boston won in impressive fashion against the Houston Astros on July 2ndto improve upon their record and keep pace in the American League. Boston got in control from the first inning and was able to hold it throughout the game tacking on several insurance runs down the stretch to win by a 10-4 score. Solid pitching by Andrew Miller helped make things easier on the offense and Boston was in control all day
Miller got his 2ndwin of the season and he is yet to have a decision go against him. In all, Boston had 13 hits that produced the ten runs. Three of the runs came right out of the gate in the top of the first inning. Two Red Sox players, Darnell McDonald and Yamaico Navarro, hit homeruns in the game. Mcdonald’s homerun was just his 2ndof the year, while Navarro hit his first of the season. The win brought the Red Sox record to 48-34 on the year and they continue to do well as the away team. When not at Fenway, Boston has been able to get wins and have a 26-18 away record.
The Houston Astros continue to struggle to get wins. The loss brought their record to 29-55 on the year and are just 14-32 in their own friendly confines at home. Ja Happ was hit early and often and got credited with his tenth loss of the season to just 3 wins. In all Houston was able to get a good amount of offense with 11 hits for 4 runs, but it could not much the offensive power of Boston. Houston’s Hunter Pence also hit his tenth homerun of the year in the game.
The two teams will meet one more time at 2:05 PM ET on July 3rd to close out the series. Boston will send the dominating Josh Beckett to the mound. From there he has 6 wins on the year to just 3 losses and has a low 2.20 earned run average. Houston will send Jordan Lyles to the rubber. He has yet to get a win this year and has a 4.75 ERA. Given the match up and how the series and season of the Astros have gone, it would be a small miracle if the team was able to steal a game from Boston. So far on the year Houston has given little to their hometown crowds and wins have been hard to come by. Hopefully, for Boston, that trend will continue.
